A new variety of raspberry Kwanza (Kwanza) was bred in the Netherlands (breeder Geert de Weert) for sale in supermarkets. The first seedlings entered the market in 2011. Recommended for cultivation in open and protected ground.
Variety advantages: high yield, excellent transportability and presentation of berries, long fruiting period, resistance to diseases and pests.
Variety Features
Plant upright, powerful. Shoots are vertical, high: in open ground 1.7-2 m, in closed ground – up to 2-2.5 m, covered with rare non-aggressive spines. Require garters to the trellis. On the side branches, ovaries and fruit branches are abundantly formed. The foliage is bright green, large, slightly wrinkled. The bushes form a sufficient amount of root shoots for reproduction.
Fruits medium large, one-dimensional, weighing 5-6 grams, do not shrink during the season. With good care, the berries can reach 10 grams. The color of ripe raspberries is bright red, the taste is – not sugary, fragrant, juicy. Mature fruits do not crumple and do not flow when harvested, they tolerate transportation well, while maintaining their presentation. The Kwanza variety is ideal for sale in markets and supermarkets.
Yield. In open ground, up to 1.2 kg of berries are harvested from a bush, in closed ground up to 1.5 kg. Potential yield with competent agricultural technology – 40-48 tons per hectare.
Terms of fruiting medium, stretched. With a one-year cycle, Kwanza produces a crop from mid-summer in warm regions, from the end of August – in the cold. The berries ripen until the first frost.
Immunity. High resistance to major pests and diseases. During the tests of Kwanza, no mite damage was noticed.
Growing conditions. The raspberry variety Kwanza is declared by the originators as drought- and winter-hardy. It is suitable for growing in open and closed ground. However, the crop shows the best results in terms of yield in greenhouses and film tunnels.
Growing features:
- Garter. High shoots can bend under the weight of the crop and break in the wind, so they must be tied to the trellis.
- Irrigation. Kwanza is a moisture-loving variety, it needs more frequent and plentiful watering than most other varieties. The problem is solved by organizing drip water supply.
- Wintering. At the end of the season in warm regions, all fruiting shoots are pruned. In the northern latitudes, in autumn, the bushes are mowed at the root, thus removing the issue of winter hardiness.
Beware of fakes and diseased planting material. Buy Kwanza raspberry seedlings from nurseries and specialized stores.
