The Glen Ample raspberry was created in 1998 at the Scottish Plant Institute in Dundee by crossing the British variety Glen Prosen and the South American Meeker raspberry. The result of the selection turned out to be successful: the absence of thorns and endurance were transferred from the first parent to the Glen Ample variety, and from the second — high vigor and productivity.
The term of maturation of the variety Glen Ample — mid-late, the first berries in central Russia can be tasted in the second or third decade of July. The fruits ripen gradually, the return of the crop lasts for a month. The ripening period may vary depending on climatic and weather conditions. The main crop is formed on two-year-old shoots.
Glen Umple — ordinary raspberry (not remontant), but sometimes in a very warm climate with a long summer season in August, flowers and ovaries may form on the tops of annual shoots. Winter hardiness and drought resistance are estimated at 9 points, with frosts below -30 ° C, the shoots require shelter. Immunity to diseases — 8 points, resistance to pests — 7–8 points. Plants are not damaged by aphids, but may be susceptible to viruses.
Planting: Raspberry Glen Ample is demanding on the nutrient content of the soil, with a lack of potassium and phosphorus, productivity is reduced, as well as the size and quality of berries. It is important when preparing the soil before planting to make a sufficient amount of organic matter. For digging, 2 & ndash; 3 buckets of humus or compost are brought in per 1 m2. 1 liter of wood ash and complex mineral fertilizers are added to the planting pits.
Since the bushes of this variety are very vigorous, a dense planting will contribute to shading and create conditions for the development of fungal diseases. In industrial cultivation, the distance between rows should be 3 & ndash; 3.5 m, and between seedlings in a row — 0.5 & ndash; 0.7 m. In the conditions of a garden plot, the row spacing can be reduced to 2.5 m or a single-line planting can be made.
