Raspberry variety «Sokolitsa» bred by Polish breeders in 2011 by crossing popular raspberry varieties: «Polana» and the Malling Promise. It combines the best features of the progenitors: high yield, large-fruitedness, resistance to diseases and pests of berry crops.
A mid-ripening summer garden raspberry variety, designed for outdoor cultivation, but also gives excellent yields in greenhouses.
Varie Features
A bush of medium spreading, 1.7-2 m high. The shoots are covered with small thorns. Foliage of medium size, rich green color with narrow teeth.
Falcon fruit very large, medium weight – 7 g. Elongated, laterally flattened, shaped like a spindle. Color – intense red with a sheen. They have a dessert taste and a delicate raspberry aroma. Berries are excellent for fresh consumption and for all types of processing. They tolerate transportation well.
The yield of the variety is high – 170-200 q/ha, with a planting pattern of 2.0x0.5 m.
Raspberry winter hardiness is average. When grown on the territory of Russia, "Sokolitsa" needs additional shelter for the period of cold weather. At the same time, the variety normally tolerates heat, dry air, and a long absence of precipitation.
Planting and care
Since the Sokolitsa variety quite whimsical, in the process of growth, raspberries require attention.
Planting of this variety of raspberries in the southern and middle latitudes is done in spring (after the onset of positive temperatures and warming up of the soil) or in autumn (after leaf fall). In regions with a cold climate (Urals, Siberia), raspberries are planted exclusively in the spring to allow the culture to take root well and grow.
Sprouts up to 35 cm high are placed in trenches, pre-filled with a nutrient mixture of organic matter, mineral fertilizers, and ash. Leave a distance between plants – 60 cm, between rows – 1-1.2 m. Then the soil is rammed, watered abundantly and mulched. It is advisable to tie the shoots to the trellis.
Irrigation «Sokolitsy» they are not often produced, since the variety tolerates dry summers well and does not tolerate excess moisture (the latter has a bad effect on the root system and crop quality). Usually raspberries are watered several times during flowering and fruit set. During wet summers and frequent precipitation, the mulch is removed from the surface to ensure the evaporation of moisture.
Pruning raspberries is done twice a year: in the fall, all 2-year-old shoots are removed, in the spring, frozen, broken, diseased and pest-affected branches are removed. The young shoots are thinned out and ensure that the plantings do not thicken. When a new bush reaches a height of 90 cm, pinch the tops of its shoots. This contributes to the growth of lateral fruit-bearing branches.
Feeding. In the spring, "Sokolitsa" fertilize with preparations containing nitrogen, natural organics, mineral fertilizers. During the period of fruit setting, complex fertilizers are applied. After harvesting, phosphorus is added.
Preparing for winter. Raspberries need mandatory soil mulching and shelter for the winter. Annual shoots are bent to the ground and covered with agrofiber. In the spring, the material is removed only after the onset of regularly warm days and nights – for «Sokolitsa» frost damage. These procedures help protect the root system and stems from freezing.
