Strawberry variety Federica – the result of research by Italian breeders, bred in 2014 for cultivation mainly in regions with a continental climate. Due to the late ripening period, high productivity and crop quality, this new strawberry variety for the Russian market has already been characterized as promising for both horticultural and industrial cultivation.
Varie Features
The Federica bush is medium in size, strong, with moderate mustache. Forms numerous inflorescences of white flowers. The foliage is bright green oval with small teeth.
The fruits are sweet, medium-sized (30-40 gr.), aligned, shortened conical shape. The color of the berries is saturated red, after picking it does not darken. Strawberry peel is dense, so it tolerates transportation well, retains commercial qualities. From garden strawberries of this variety, delicious homemade preparations are obtained.
Federica yield: 0.7-1.0 kg per bush. The main advantage of – late maturation. Strawberries ripen from the second half of July to mid-August, which makes it economically viable for growing. During the period when the market for fresh strawberries is empty, Federica can be sold at a higher price.
Planting and care
Federica's strawberry is unpretentious to growing conditions and care:
- Suitable for all soils, but will prefer a sunny site with neutral or slightly acidic soil.
- Does not deteriorate in rainy weather, although it is better to avoid stagnant moisture and resort to drainage during prolonged rainfall.
- Resistant to fungal diseases.
Planting. The best period for planting Federica is August-September, so young seedlings have time to take root and give flower buds before the cold weather, and next season strawberries give a full harvest. During spring planting, the bushes must be covered with a film, and not removed until the return frosts recede and stable warm weather is established.
Planting is carried out according to the standard scheme for strawberries: in a trench or pit method. The distance between bushes is 40-50 cm, between holes and trenches 40-60 cm. The seedling is covered with soil up to the root collar and watered again.
Water. Federica likes moderate and regular watering. Once a week – in moderate weather. Twice a week – in heat and dryness. After watering, the earth must be loosened around the bush in order to remove the crust formed from the water and open the access of oxygen to the roots. It is also necessary to remove weeds in a timely manner and thin out extra mustaches so that they do not pull away beneficial substances from the main plant. Soil mulching or growing strawberries on black agrofibre will help save time on loosening and weed control.
Feeding. The main feeding of Federica can be divided into 3 stages:
- Spring. Nitrogen is added to the soil in the form of organic fertilizers, for example, an infusion of mullein or chicken manure.
- Before flowering. Feed with compositions for berries with potassium, phosphorus, boron, magnesium.
- Autumn. After harvesting, the soil is enriched with microelements, complex mineral fertilizers are added (with the exception of nitrogen).
Wintering. Federica was bred specifically for growing in continental climates. The maximum frost resistance of the variety is – 18 ° C. Therefore, in regions with severe winters with little snow, as well as with a sharply continental climate, strawberries are covered for the winter near the ground with a dense layer of straw, coniferous spruce branches. Additionally, a film or agrofibre is placed on the arcs.
Beware of fakes! Strawberry seedlings of the Federica variety entered the mass Russian market not so long ago, so we recommend buying seedlings only in proven places – nurseries and specialized stores.
