The Natchez blackberry variety was bred at the Arkansas Institute (USA) in 2001. Patented in 2007 after 6 years of testing.

Variety advantages: early ripening, high yield, no thorns, large-fruited, dry separation of berries, resistance to diseases and pests, high recovery ability of the bush.

Characteristics of the variety

Shrubssprawling, semi-spreading type (dewberry) with a strong root system. Shoots without thorns, 3-4 m long, from an upright position gradually turn into a horizontal one, grow rapidly, form numerous lateral branches. The leaves are light green, terry, with a serrated edge. Blackberries bloom in mid-late May. The berries are well attached to the stalk, do not crumble.

Fruitselongated cylindrical shape, large – the average length of berries is 3.7-4.0 cm, weight 7-12 gr.  Skin color – black, glossy. The pulp is dense, juicy with a small drupe. The taste of blackberries is sweet – tasting score (4.6 points).

The yieldof the Natchez variety is high – 15-20 kg of berries from a bush. Berries are formed on the shoots of the second year, 12-30 pieces per fruit inflorescence. Blackberry ripening dates are early: in the southern regions – mid-late June, in the middle lane and Siberia – July. Extended fruiting – 35-40 days, sometimes longer. To increase productivity, bushes are grown in a two-year cycle.

Immunityto diseases and pests is above average. Preventive treatments are recommended.

Destination. Blackberry Natchez is suitable for fresh consumption, desserts and cuts. Thanks to the "dry collection" berries, their high transportability and keeping quality, the variety is suitable for commercial cultivation.

Growing conditions. The Natchez variety cannot be called heat and frost resistant. In hot sunny weather above + 35 ° C, the bushes need shading. When it gets cold below -14°C and blackberries will need shelter – although the shoots themselves are quite resistant to low temperatures, flower buds may die. In the spring, it is necessary to cover the plant even in the southern regions, because. there is a high probability of return frosts during the flowering period of blackberries. For the winter, the bushes are bent to the ground, covered with straw and dense agrofibre. Of the advantages of the – the ability of bushes to self-heal in case of freezing.
