The Brzezina blackberry cultivar was bred by Jan Danek and Agnieszka Orel, employees of the Polish Institute of Horticulture, by crossing Black Satin blackberry seedlings. and "Darrow". The new variety was patented in 2012, and in the spring of 2015, Brzezin blackberry seedlings went on sale.
Variety advantages: early ripening, lack of thorns, small number of shoots, drought and frost resistance, good transportability of berries.
Characteristics of the variety
Shrubstall (up to 3 m tall) with a powerful root system, almost do not form shoots. Shoots semi-creeping, without thorns, bend poorly. Fruit branches numerous, short. The leaves are light green with a serrated edge. The berries are collected in brushes of about 10 pieces each.
Fruits oblong, large, average weight of berries – 5-6 gr., maximum 9 gr. The color of ripe blackberries – black. Peel – thick, shiny. The pulp is juicy, fragrant. Dessert taste, tasting evaluation – 4.6 out of 5 points.
ProductivityAccording to the originators of the variety, 8 kg of berries can be harvested from an adult blackberry bush. Brzezina begins to bear fruit steadily in the 3rd season, the fruits are formed on the growth of the previous year. Harvest ripening dates: southern and mild climate – beginning of July, northern latitudes – middle of the month. Fruiting is extended for 5-6 weeks, the crop is harvested in stages.
Immunityto diseases and pests is average. Preventive treatment of shrubs at the beginning of the season is recommended.
Destination. Brzezina is suitable for commercial cultivation, sale on the market. Berries tolerate transportation well, do not flow when stored in a cool place. Also, blackberries can be consumed fresh, frozen, processed into jams, marmalades, compotes, etc.
Growing conditions. Blackberry variety «Brzezina» tolerates drought and heat well, but loves moisture. Therefore, it is still not worth neglecting regular watering. The manufacturer claims a high frost resistance of the variety, but it is better to cover the shoots for the winter (with straw or agrofibre).
