The blackcurrant variety Fortuna was bred by the employees of the Sverdlovsk breeding station as a result of free pollination of hybrid seedlings of the Valovaya family. In 2015, "Fortuna" included in the State Register of the Russian Federation for the Volga-Vyatka region.
Variety advantages: high drought and winter hardiness, good resistance to pests and diseases.
Variety Features
Plant. Bush Fortune tall, 50-70 cm, semi-spreading, gradually formed into a spherical shape. Shoots are straight, hairless with three- and five-lobed leaves. Fruit brushes are drooping, up to 8 cm long. 5-10 large flowers are formed on each brush.
Fruitsround, large. The mass of berries varies from 1.8 to 6 grams, diameter is up to 1 cm. The peel of ripe Fortuna – rich black with a glossy sheen, quite dense, so the currant does not flow when harvested. The pulp is juicy, contains up to 37 small grains. The taste of currant is dessert, sweet and sour. The aroma is weak. Tasting assessment – 4.1 points out of 5.
Variety purpose: universal.
Yield "Fortune" 37.1 q/ha. The first berries ripen closer to August, the fruiting period – stretched.
Immunity. Resistance to fungal and bacterial diseases, bud mites.
Growing conditions. Currant variety «Fortuna» unpretentious, adapts well to any soil and weather conditions. It has high drought and frost resistance. Suitable for growing in the Urals, Siberia, Central Russia.
Fortune – self-fertile plant, i.e. does not require replanting other currant varieties for cross-pollination. Seedlings of this crop are often used as pollinators to produce new varieties.
Selecting planting material
Before you buy Fortuna blackcurrant seedlings, pay attention to:
- The state of the root system. It should have 3-5 main healthy and elastic roots – at least 20 cm long, with many small fibrous processes. Without traces of dryness, putrefaction, diseases.
- Appearance of shoots – well-developed stems in the amount of 2-4 pieces, at least 40 cm long. Bark without signs of dryness, cuts, breaks, unnatural spots.
- Age of seedlings. 2-year-old plants are most suitable for planting. They adapt more easily and will grow in a new place.
