Gooseberry Chelyabinsk green

The Chelyabinsk green gooseberry was bred at the South Ural Research Institute of Horticulture and Potato Growing (Yekaterinburg) by crossing varieties "Bedford Yellow"; and Houghton. At the end of state tests in 1959, the variety was included in the State Register of the Russian Federation for the Ural and West Siberian regions.

Variety advantages: winter and drought-resistant, self-fertile, productive. Weaknesses: thorns, no immunity to septoria.

Characteristics of the variety

Shrub of medium height, sprawling, dense.  Shoots thickened, arched, covered with thorns. Foliage 3 and 5 lobed, plentiful. The leaf plate is light green, leathery with large rounded teeth along the edge. The flowers are pink and red, medium in size on long stalks, arranged singly.

Fruits round-oval, medium-sized, average weight 2.5-3.5 gr.  The color of ripe berries – emerald green. Peel – thin.  Taste – sweet with slight sourness. Tasting assessment – 5 out of 5.

Assignment of the variety – universal. Suitable for fresh consumption, processing, sale.

Immunity. The variety is susceptible to septoria, moderately resistant to powdery mildew. Recommended preventive treatment of bushes. When planting, lowlands and areas prone to waterlogging should be avoided.

Growing conditions. Gooseberries «Chelyabinsk green» – frost-resistant, does not require additional shelter for the winter. For planting seedlings, it is best to choose a sunny area near a fence or other artificial fence that will prevent snow cover from blowing.

The culture is relatively drought tolerant, so timely watering is important, especially during dry periods.
