Apple tree Ural bulk

Apple cultivar Uralskoye bulk was bred by the famous breeder, professor at the South Ural Research Institute of Horticulture and Potato Growing, P. Zhavoronkov. For this, the scientist crossed the "Purple Ranetka" with the variety «Papirovka». The apple tree was included in the State Register in 1959 with a permit for cultivation in Western and Eastern Siberia, in the Volga-Vyatka, Ural, Far Eastern regions.

Variety advantages: winter hardiness (-60°C), high yield, early stable fruiting, taste and versatility of fruits. Among the shortcomings, gardeners note small fruit and breaking of branches under the load of apples.

Characteristics of the variety

Treetall, can reach 7-8 meters in height. The crown is round-drooping, strongly thickened. To  the plant was not overcome by scab, and the apples were not crushed, formative pruning is carried out annually, and the height of the tree is limited to 3-4 meters.

The bark on the trunk and skeletal branches is greenish-gray, on the shoots – brown. Leaves of the extended form, a plate – smooth with finely serrated margins. Flowers cup-shaped, pink. Apples are formed on last year's growths, twigs and fruits.

Fruitsround-conical shape, slightly ribbed, aligned. The average weight is 40-60 gr. Ripe fruit peel – smooth, delicate, yellow in color with a pale pink blush. Pulp – creamy, fine-grained, juicy. Taste – sweet with slight sourness.

Variety assignment universal – fresh consumption, cooking, preparations. Ripe plucked fruits are stored for up to 1.5 months.

Productivity of the annual variety is very high – up to 200-250 kg per tree, starting from season 2-3. The fruits ripen from mid-September. Ripe apples do not crumble, remaining on the tree until leaf fall. Under the weight of the harvest, the branches of the Ural Bulk break.  

Immunity. The variety is prone to scab disease and codling moth attack. Preventive measures: pruning and crown formation, removal and burning of fallen leaves and branches, whitewashing trunks, spring treatment with prophylactic preparations.

Growing conditions. Due to the unique frost resistance and the ability to self-heal, the grade "Ural Bulk" suitable for cultivation in areas of risky farming. Thus, in the winter of 1979, a varietal record was recorded: at an absolute minimum of – 57 °C, apple trees only slightly froze, and with warming they quickly recovered and gave a harvest. In addition, the trees are not afraid of reverse frosts and bloom in early June.
