Sea buckthorn Athena — large-fruited variety of medium ripening. Bred in the Research Institute of Horticulture of Siberia. M.A. Lisavenko by crossing the elite form 1186-84-2 (3-67-2475 sv.op. (Shcherbinka-1 & times; Kudyrga-1) with the pollinator 1431-86 (Tenga). In 2015, "Afina" was transferred to the State Variety Test.
Advantages: high yield, large-fruited.
Characteristics of the variety
Shrub very vigorous, tree-like with an oval crown of medium density. Shoots are gray-brown, slightly curved. The foliage is elliptical, green with a bluish tinge. The leafiness of the bush is average, the thorniness – weak.
Fruitsovoid, large. The average weight of a berry – 1.1-1.4 gr. Peel – red-orange. Pulp – juicy, sweet and sour. Separation of fruits – wet, breakout force – average.
Purpose variety technical. Sea buckthorn is suitable for various types of processing, oil production. Berries can also be consumed fresh, used as a traditional medicine.
Productivity and terms of fruiting. Productivity of Athena is high – 11.0 tons of berries are harvested from one hectare. The bush begins to bear fruit from the 4th year of planting. Fruit ripening term – medium, from August 25 to September 15.
Immunity. With proper care, the variety is practically not affected by diseases and pests.
Growing conditions. Like many varieties of Siberian breeding, Athena sea buckthorn is distinguished by unpretentious planting conditions and good frost resistance. The variety is suitable for growing in regions with cold winters and sudden temperature changes: in Siberia, the Urals, the Far East, in Central Russia.
