Alexander Lucas Butterbirne, Beurre Alexandre Lucas – world famous variety of French origin. Cultivated in the 70s of the XIX century from a wild pear that grew in the forests of Sologne (Department of the Loire and Cher). Among Russian gardeners, the variety has spread under the names Lukas or Lyukasovka.

Variety advantages: large marketable fruits, excellent taste, unpretentiousness, transportability.

Characteristics of the variety

Treemedium-sized, fast growing, up to 5-5.5 m in height. The crown is broadly oval, medium thickened. Shoots are light brown, covered with wavy foliage. Type of fruiting – ringed.

Fruits oval-conical shape, large, weighing 200-400 gr. The skin of a ripe pear is yellow with a reddish blush, gray dots are present on the surface. Pulp – granular, juicy, with duchesse flavor, melts in your mouth. Taste – sweet with a sour note, oily. Tasting assessment — 4.8 points out of 5.

Variety Assignment – universal: fresh consumption, sale, preparation of blanks and desserts.

Productivity Take Luke high – up to 55 kg of fruits are harvested from one tree per season, starting from the 3rd year of planting. Late ripening dates for pears: mid-September — early October. To increase the keeping quality, the fruits are removed in a semi-ripe state, leaving them to ripen indoors. Duration of storage of pears – about 4 months at +2…+3°C (in the basement or refrigerator).

Immuneto septoria and scab. Weak resistance to powdery mildew, rust and moniliosis. Recommended spring preventive treatment.

Growing conditions. The Bere Luka pear is classified in the 5th climatic zone in terms of frost resistance with temperatures up to & minus 28.9 °C. However, cultivation of the variety in the Russian regions has shown that in areas where winter temperatures fall below –10… –15°C, the lower part of the trees and the area around the trunk must be insulated for the winter – wrap trunks with burlap or wrap with coniferous spruce branches.
