Pinus banksiana — evergreen coniferous tree of the pine family. In the wild, it grows in the northeastern United States (Indiana, Minnesota, Maine, Michigan, etc.), as well as in Canada. The species got its name from the English botanist Joseph Banks. The tree is also known as Canadian Horn Pine, Labrador Pine, Northern Dwarf Pine, and Dapper Pine. The variety came to Europe in 1785, where it became popular with landscape designers.

Appearance

Treein the wild grows up to 20 meters high, rarely reaches 30 m. In landscape design, dwarf pine subspecies are more often used. Trunk – up to 25-30 cm thick. Crown – branched, sparse, round or oval. Bark – red-brown with deep cracks.

Intensive growth of pine lasts up to 20 years, then slows down. A young plant looks like a fluffy shrub.

Bunks Pine Needles has an amazing, fresh scent. The needles are curved, 2-4 cm long and 1-1.5 mm thick, arranged in pairs. The color of the needles in an adult tree – bright green. In a young seedling, the needles have a yellowish tint, which disappears over time.

Conescurved shape with a pointed end, small size: up to 4.5 cm in length. They appear at the end of spring, after ripening they decorate the tree for several more years.

Application. Banks pine and its dwarf hybrids are very popular with gardeners and owners of private houses, as well as landscape designers. It is planted as a decoration of personal plots, used for landscaping garden and park areas.

Pine looks good alone, in group mono plantings and in combination with other conifers. Alleys, hedges, "island" are formed from it. compositions.

Growing conditions. Labrador pine tolerates drought and replanting well, is undemanding to soil quality, unpretentious care, does not need regular pruning. The high frost resistance of the tree makes it possible to grow it in regions with severe winters.
