Growing conditions
"Bow Borisova" – one of the most unpretentious blackcurrant varieties. It can be grown in southern and northern latitudes, it does not freeze in the Siberian winter and tolerates dry summers well. Due to its resistance to fungal diseases, the variety is suitable for cultivation in humid climates. «Bow Borisova» – self-fertile, i.e. does not require neighborhood with other blackcurrant varieties for cross-pollination. To grow a full-fledged crop of delicious large berries, you must follow the basic rules for planting and caring for blackcurrants.
Blackcurrant prefers:
- Sunny, elevated areas, free from shadows and drafts.
- Fertile light, well-draining soils, with a neutral to slightly acidic pH of 5.5-6.5. Depleted land before planting should be enriched with organic matter – spread manure, compost or humus around the site, dig it along with the soil.
- Organic, nitrogen-containing and mineral supplements (applied starting from the 2nd season). When planting seedlings at the bottom of the hole, it is necessary to lay a fertile mixture of humus, compost and a fertile soil layer.
- Regular moderate watering: 1-2 times a month during moderate summer, 1 time per week – during severe drought.
- Loosening and mulching the soil around the bushes after each watering.
- Root warming before wintering (the diameter around the bush is mulched with a thick layer of straw, sawdust, coniferous spruce branches).
Deadly for blackcurrant:
- Lowers, flooding, high groundwater, swamping.
- Acid and saline soils.
- Plots where berry bushes grew less than 3 years ago, for example, gooseberries, raspberries, currants of other varieties.
- Prolonged lack of watering and excess moisture.
- Shade all day, strong north and northwest winds.
- Pest-infected plants in the area.
Selecting planting material
Before you buy blackcurrant seedlings Poklon Borisova, pay attention to:
- The state of the root system. It should have 3-5 main healthy and elastic roots – at least 20 cm long, with many small fibrous processes. Without traces of dryness, putrefaction, diseases.
- Appearance of shoots – well-developed stems in the amount of 2-4 pieces, at least 40 cm long. Bark without signs of dryness, cuts, breaks, unnatural spots.
- Age of seedlings. Most of all, 2-3-year-old plants are suitable for planting. They adapt more easily and will grow in a new place.
Beware of fakes and "sick" planting material! Buy currant seedlings «Bow Borisova» in nurseries and specialized stores.
