Primalba – the newest variety of remontant raspberry was bred in the nursery of Hengartner GmbH (Switzerland). In November 2018, he was at the international exhibition ExpoSE in Germany.

The novelty appeared on the market of Russia and the CIS only in 2019, therefore, to date, there is still little data on the features of growing Primalba and its harvest in the Russian regions. All information is based only on the research of European colleagues.

Varie Features

Primalba– the earliest autumn variety of remontant raspberries, which meets high quality standards. It is assumed that the harvest of Primalba will fill the gap when the summer fruiting of most varieties has already passed, and the autumn – hasn't started yet.

The berries are large, weighing up to 6-8 grams, conical in shape, sweet, bright red. When harvesting, they are easily separated from the stalk, and at the same time they do not crumble. The fruits have good transportability, perfectly retain their commercial qualities.

Primalba test results

Agronomic trials of the new variety were carried out on the Italian plantations of Baselga di Pine and in Borgo Valsutana.

In Pina, the agricultural technicians of the nursery Hengartner GmbH planted Primalba in a tunnel film greenhouse. A  Borgo Valsutane  tests were carried out in the field. Landing was carried out in early April.

Agronomists have been collecting the autumn harvest in the greenhouses of Baselga di Pine since the beginning of August, recording the weight and number of berries. Nursery technician Marco Taddei Dalla Torre:

“The results showed that Primalba is several days ahead of the Polka variety in terms of ripening period. In fact, 92% of the produce was harvested within five weeks. The overall yield was excellent and outperformed other varieties with similar fruit characteristics. In addition, Primalba berries were the least prone to deformation.

The trial at Borgo Valsugana simulated a typical field situation. Here, 750 Primalba bushes were planted under the same conditions as annual seedlings of other varieties. The results of growing the variety in an open habitat showed another feature of Primalba — ease of harvesting berries, as well as the highest yield among other varieties.

Russian berry farms have high hopes for a new raspberry variety. I wonder if Primalba will be in demand on the Russian market.
