A new variety of strawberry Tethis (Tethis) was created by Italian breeders by crossing the male parent of the variety "Chandler"; (U.S. Patent No. 5262) and female generic seedling "FB-1".
The new variety is distinguished by high productivity, large size of berries, as well as a tendency to the second fruiting (semi-repair qualities). Suitable for both private and commercial cultivation.
Varie Features
The Tethys bush is vigorous, erect, 23-30 cm. The leaves are medium in size, shiny, wrinkled, bright green in color, supported by a strong stem. The teeth are medium large, single, with a depth of 4.5 to 6 mm. Petioles are long, with medium or weak pubescence. The hair on the petiole grows upward. Stipules are paired, green.
The flowers are white, flush with the foliage. The average flower diameter is about 3.4 cm. Up to 10-13 flowers bloom on one inflorescence, usually with 5 petals. Pollen is abundant, yellow.
Large size Tethys fruits – from 20 to 60 gr. The largest berries are observed in the first harvest. The shape of the fruit is conical or biconical, the color is bright red. Strawberry seeds are laid on the same level with the surface, evenly distributed.
The pulp is darker, homogeneous, the taste is sweet with moderate sourness. Juiciness is medium. The aroma is soft, expressed medium. Despite their size, the berries are resistant to picking and transportation. After harvesting, unprocessed fruits are stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Suitable for sale in "fresh markets".
The yield of the variety is quite high – up to 1.5 kg per bush. The variety belongs to the group of medium ripening, while it is prone to a second harvest in late summer and is classified as semi-repair.
Planting and care
The Tethys strawberry cultivar shows moderate susceptibility to root diseases and downy mildew. Frost resistance – medium, for areas with cold winters and a sharply continental climate, growing in a shelter is recommended.
Give a good harvest Tethys will be in sunny areas, with well-drained soil. It will gratefully respond to timely fertilizing with mineral fertilizers for berries. At the same time, the variety is afraid of calcareous soils and extreme temperature changes.
Strawberries of this variety are propagated mainly by shoots, although other well-known methods, such as micropropagation, can be used. Plants take root well after transplantation.
Beware of fakes! Strawberry seedlings of the Tethis variety entered the mass Russian market not so long ago, so we recommend buying seedlings only in proven places – nurseries and specialized stores.
