Remontant strawberry variety Anais (Anais) bred in France, is considered a descendant of the variety Mara de Bois – the most delicious alpine strawberries of neutral daylight hours. Advantages of the variety: long-term fruiting, high yield, winter hardiness, even size and shape, exquisite taste and aroma.
Description of variety
Anais bushes are powerful, tall (more than 20 cm), while being quite compact up to 30 cm in diameter, they do not take up much space on the site. The leaves are light green, large. Peduncles erect with numerous inflorescences, bent under the weight of the crop. Flowers white large. Mustache formation is moderate.
The fruits of garden strawberries are orange-red, shiny, with an ideal wide-conical shape. The weight of the berries is average – 18-20 gr., although the first berries are often larger than the next ones and can reach – 30-35 gr.
The taste of strawberries is dessert, with a pronounced strawberry aroma. Sweet, juicy and at the same time not sugary berries will appeal to both adults and children. Anais' weak spot – thin skin, so strawberries do not withstand long-term transportation and storage. More suitable for personal use and homemade preparations in the form of jam, jam, compotes.
The yield of the "Frenchman" high: 0.8-1.0 kg per bush. The richest harvest is celebrated on the 2nd year of planting. Anais – remontant of neutral daylight hours (VAT). It bears fruit throughout the summer season: from the beginning of summer until the first frost. Strawberries are harvested in several passes.
Planting and care
Anais – a young strawberry variety that is just entering the Russian market, therefore it has been little studied for the effectiveness of growing in different climatic conditions of the Russian Federation. The originators of the variety declare such strawberry features as high frost and winter hardiness, resistance to spotting and fungal diseases, no need for special care or cultivation approach.
Planting. Strawberry seedlings of the Anais variety are planted in spring, summer or autumn. Planting technology is standard for a remontant variety:
- For landing, a sunny, draft-protected site is chosen. The soil should be fertile, preferably black soil or loam, with a neutral pH or slightly acidic.
- The plot is being prepared in advance – weeds and the remains of previous plantings are removed with roots. Fertilizers are applied: humus, mullein, wood ash. Dig up and leave for 3-4 weeks. The soil for spring planting has been prepared since autumn.
- Planting scheme: trench (in rows) or staggered (separate holes). Leave a distance of 25-30 cm between rows, 40-50 cm between plants.
- When planting a seedling in a hole, make sure that the roots do not bend, and the growth neck remains flush with the ground.
- After the planting of seedlings is completed, the bed must be well shed with warm water. And water daily for 2 weeks. Then watering is reduced to 1-2 times a week, depending on the weather.
Water. Anais likes regular but moderate watering. It is important that the soil is moistened to a depth of 3-4 cm, while not overflowing. The beds are watered at least 1 time per week in moderate weather, on dry hot days the frequency is increased to 2-3 per week.
In the heat, as well as during periods of flowering and fruiting, it is important to supply water strictly under the root, in the morning or evening, to avoid burns on the leaves and the appearance of gray mold on the berry. The best choice for strawberries is the organization of a drip irrigation system.
Loosening and removing whiskers. Loosening the soil is carried out after each watering. They break the crust formed from the water, and thereby open the access of oxygen to the roots. They also monitor the spread of weeds and the number of mustaches that draw nutrients and growth strength from the main plants.
To facilitate the care of strawberries, save time and energy on watering, loosening and weeding, soil mulching with straw, sawdust or black agrofibre will help. Mulch will retain moisture in the soil, will prevent the growth and spread of weeds, and will also eliminate the need to loosen the ground.
Feeding. Because Anais – a variety of long fruiting (more than 4 months), it needs up to 5-6 top dressings per season, the most effective is the alternation of organic and mineral fertilizers.
All seasonal feeding Anais can be divided into 3 stages:
- In spring, strawberries need nitrogen fertilizers, which contribute to an active set of green mass. Suitable infusions of mullein, bird droppings, compost.
- During flowering, complex mineral fertilizers containing potassium and phosphorus are added, they will add sweetness to the berry and have a positive effect on the yield of strawberries.
- At the end of the fruiting period, mineral complexes without nitrogen, wood ash are introduced into the soil.
Preparing for winter. The winter hardiness of a new strawberry variety in the regions of the Russian Federation with severe and little snowy winters has not yet been studied enough. Therefore, in a harsh climate, strawberries are recommended to be covered with mulch made of straw or coniferous spruce branches before wintering, agrofilm or spunbond is stretched on arcs, which is removed with the onset of heat, after the threat of return spring frosts has passed.
