Triple Crown was developed in 1996 in the USA by crossing Black Magic and Columbia Star blackberries. Employees of the Zonal Research Center (Maryland) and the Pacific Agricultural Research Station (Oregon) worked on the creation of the variety. In Oregon, Triple Crown seedlings passed 8 years of testing before entering the consumer market.
Variety advantages: lack of thorns, vigorous plant, large fragrant berry, high resistance to heat, drought and cold weather, the possibility of dense planting, suitable for growing on an industrial scale.
Characteristics of the variety
Shrubs semi-creeping type, vigorous, with a powerful root system and good shoot formation. Scourges from 2 to 6 meters in length, without spikes. The leaves are similar in shape and structure to currant foliage. The berries are collected in brushes, formed on the growth of the previous year.
Fruitsround or oval, large, average weight 7-9 gr., maximum 11-13 gr. By the end of the season they do not shrink. The color of ripe berries – black with a sheen, at the stage of early ripeness – red. Pulp with small drupes, juicy, aromatic with hints of cherries. Taste – dessert, sweet. Tasting score 4.8 points.
Productivity Triple Crown averages 13 kg of berries per bush. Fruit ripening is medium-late, stretched, begins at the end of July — August. Berries can ripen until the end of October. It is important to understand that in the northern latitudes, where the growing season ends earlier, the autumn part of the crop may not be harvested.
Immunityto diseases and pests is high. Preventive treatment is desirable, especially with thick planting.
Destination. Triple Crown blackberries are good for fresh consumption, desserts, preparations for the winter — compotes, jams, juices. The variety is suitable for commercial cultivation. The berry is stored for up to 7-10 days in a cool room, at a temperature of + 5-7 ° C, without losing its commercial qualities, it is resistant to transportation over long distances.
Growing conditions. Blackberry variety "Triple Crown" heat and drought resistant. However, with prolonged heat and active southern sun, it is better to shade the plant and provide moisture. Also, the plant prefers fertile soils and needs shelter for the winter. Plus varieties – late flowering of bushes, which avoids deadly return frosts for the crop.
