The blackberry cultivar Ouachita was bred in 1993 by researchers at the University of Arkansas (USA) by cross-pollination of the Navajo blackberry and Ark.1506 seedling. After many years of testing, in 2006, Auchita was patented. After that, her seedlings went on sale. The name of the variety comes from the Indian tribe Ouachita – "river with sparkling silver water." In Russian transcription, it is pronounced differently: Auchita, Oachita, Washito.

Variety advantages: lack of thorns, powerful shoots, early ripening, high yield, large fragrant berries.

Characteristics of the variety

Shrubs without thorns, tall with powerful shoots that do not bend under the weight of the fruit even without a garter to a support.

Fruitslarge, the average weight of the berry is 6-7 gr., does not shrink until the end of fruiting. The color of the skin is rich black, with a characteristic sheen. Pulp – juicy, sweet with hints of cherries and currants.

Yield – 30 kg from one bush. Long fruiting – June – August. The ripening of the berries is early and extended, so the harvest approaches gradually.

Immunityto pests and fungal diseases is average. Preventive treatment of bushes is necessary.

Destination. Blackberry Auchita is good for both personal and commercial cultivation. Due to the high transportability and keeping quality of berries, the variety is suitable for wholesale and retail sales.

Growing conditions. The blackberry variety Ouachita feels good in southern latitudes, enduring heat and drought. The same cannot be said about frosts and temperatures below -17°C. Therefore, in regions with a cold spring and at the risk of return frosts, flowering bushes are additionally covered. For the winter, blackberries are bent to the ground, insulated with straw and dense agrofibre.
