The Kiowa blackberry cultivar was bred by breeders at the University of Arkansas (USA) by crossing experimental seedlings Arc.791 and Arc.1058. A new type of blackberry, registered in 1996 and named after the Kiowa Indian tribe, is today considered one of the largest varieties in the world.
Variety advantages: very large berries, resistance to frost, fungal diseases, pests, good transportability, long-term fruiting. The disadvantages include sharp spikes.
Characteristics of the variety
Shrubs upright growing, 1.5-2 m high. Shoots covered with thorns. The foliage is profuse, dark green. The flowers are white with a pinkish tint.
Fruits oval, large, average weight 13-15 gr., maximum 22-23 gr. The color of ripe berries is deep black with a glossy surface. The pulp is juicy with medium-sized drupes. Taste – dessert, sweet with a barely noticeable sourness (1.9% acid). Aroma – pronounced with crimson notes.
Productivity varieties of Kiova – 10 kg per bush, 4-6 tons per hectare. Ripening dates for berries – late, the beginning depends on the climatic zone (end of July, August). Extended fruiting – Blackberries produce their main crop within six weeks. In the northern latitudes, part of the crop may not be harvested due to the onset of cold weather.
Immunityto fungal diseases and pests, subject to prevention.
Destination. Kiowa blackberries are consumed fresh, they prepare delicious desserts, jams, compotes, liqueurs. It can be frozen, because. when defrosted, it retains its shape, taste and useful properties. Fresh berries remain intact during transportation, stored in cool rooms for up to 10 days. Variety suitable for commercial use.
Growing conditions. Kiowa withstands colds up to –23C°. This index of frost resistance, high by the standards of American varieties, is clearly insufficient for most Russian regions. In latitudes with extremely cold winters and a high probability of returning frosts, blackberries are best grown under temporary shelters and insulated for the winter. It is also important not to forget about regular moderate watering and shading in case of prolonged heat and the scorching southern sun.
