Redcurrant Jonker Van Tets (Jonker Van Tets) – a hybrid obtained by Dutch breeders back in 1941, by crossing varieties "London Market"; and "Faya". The variety reached the Russian gardener only in 1992 and instantly gained popularity due to its maximum yield, frost resistance, and large berry size.

Variety advantages: self-fertility, high winter hardiness, good stable yield, suitable for personal and industrial cultivation.

Variety features

The plantis vigorous with a branched root system. Bushes grow up to 1.7 m in height. Jonker shoots are straight, thick, flexible, do not break. The foliage is large, rounded. Currant blooms in May with large saucer-shaped flowers. Up to 10 berries are formed on one fruit brush.

Fruitsrounded, by the standards of redcurrant, large. The weight of ripe berries is 0.8-1.5 gr., diameter is about 7 mm. The color of the currant is rich red. Peel – smooth, dense. Pulp – juicy, contains 4-7 seeds. The taste of fruits is sweet with a pleasant refreshing sourness.

Purpose of the variety: universal. Jonker Van Tets currants are consumed fresh, processed into juices, fruit drinks, jellies, and used to make fruit and berry desserts.

The yield of the variety is on average 6.5 kg per bush or 16.5 tons of berries per hectare. Currant fruiting is stable, starting from the second year of planting. The ripening of berries is medium-early stretched to 2-3 weeks. It starts in mid-July and ends in early August.

Immunity. With proper care and choice of planting site, the plant is rarely affected by infections and pests.

Growing conditions. Red currant variety Jonker Van Tets – self-fertile, does not need pollinating plants. Nevertheless, it has been noticed that the crop yields the best crop when adjacent to other varieties of red currant.

The root system of Jonker Van Tets is sensitive to low temperatures, bushes can be affected by recurrent frosts, however, the variety is successfully grown in regions with cold winters and hot summers. To do this, it is important to choose the right landing site – protected from cold winds and drafts, with constant access to sunlight, light, non-acidified, fertile soil.

Selecting planting material

Before you buy Jonker Van Tets redcurrant seedlings, pay attention to:

  • The state of the root system. It should have 3-5 main healthy and elastic roots – at least 20 cm long, with many small fibrous processes. Without traces of dryness, putrefaction, diseases.
  • Appearance of shoots – well-developed stems in the amount of 2-4 pieces, at least 40 cm long. Bark without signs of dryness, cuts, breaks, unnatural spots.
  • Age of seedlings. Most of all, 2-year-old plants are suitable for planting. They adapt more easily and will grow in a new place.

Beware of fakes and "sick" planting material! Buy currant seedlings "Jonker Van Tets" in nurseries and specialized stores.
