The Phoenix Altai apple variety was bred in 1949 by breeders of the Research Institute of Horticulture of Siberia named after I. M.A. Lisavenko (Barnaul) by free pollination of the seedling of the apple tree «Bellefleur-phoenix». In 1974, the variety was included in the State Register of the Russian Federation for the West Siberian region.
Variety advantages: stable annual yield, good winter hardiness, long shelf life and fruit taste.
Characteristics of the variety
Tree medium-sized, up to 8 m., with a spherical crown of rare skeletal branches.
Fruits flat-round shape, slightly ribbed, with a wide funnel and a small saucer. Small in size, average weight – 75-135 gr. The peel of ripe apples – light yellow with a slight blush. Pulp – white, fine-grained, juicy. Taste – sweet and sour, aromatic. Tasting assessment — 4.3 points out of 5. Purpose of the variety: universal.
Productivity of «Altai Phoenix» moderate, harvest from 43 kg of apples per tree or up to 23 t/ha. Fruiting – annual, stable, starting from the 4-5th year. Apples are removed in late autumn, they use – in winter. The shelf life of the harvested crop is up to 4 months.
Immunityto fungal diseases and pests is average. It can be affected by scab, powdery mildew, tinder fungus, codling moth.
Growing conditions. Winter hardiness "Phoenix of Altai" up to –35°C. In case of freezing, the tree is well restored. Variety – self-infertile. For cross-pollination, other apple trees must grow in the neighborhood, blooming at the same time.
