The Bluecrop blueberry was bred in 1917 by American breeders from New Jersey with the help of the Tall blueberry. The variety was imported to the territory of the USSR in the 50s of the twentieth century. Despite the rather long history, the variety was included in the State Sort Register of the Russian Federation only in 2018. To date, Bluecrop among domestic gardeners and farmers is considered the standard of blueberries.

Variety advantages:

  • stable, high yield;
  • adaptation to different climatic conditions;
  • cold resistance;
  • large berries;
  • good transportability;
  • suitable for personal and industrial cultivation.

Variety features

Plant. High blueberry bushes, 1.5-2 m., with a crown width of 1.7-2 m. Shoots erect, strong, hairless. The root system is urinary, located at a depth of 35-40 cm.

The leaves are oval, curved, shiny, with solid edges. At different times of the year, the foliage effectively changes color, so blueberry bushes are often planted not only for the sake of berries, but also as a decor for the site.  Shoots are medium green. Light colored buds.

Blueberry flowers are white with a slight green tint. Fruit raceme medium, straight, hairless. Berries are formed and ripen in clusters.

Fruits rounded flattened shape, large,  about 2 cm in diameter, weighing 1.4-2.5 gr. The skin of ripe berries is saturated blue with a pronounced bloom. The taste is juicy, sweet & nbsp; with a delicate aroma.

Purpose of variety: Bluecrop is suitable for fresh consumption, making desserts, jams, preserves, freezing.

Yield and maturity. From one Bluecrop bush, 8-10 kg of berries are harvested per season, with industrial cultivation – 158.0 q/ha, which is considered quite high for blueberries.

The main period of berry ripening falls at the end of July – beginning of August, but dates may vary depending on the region. Ripening is uneven, so the crop is harvested in 2-3 stages.

Immunity. Blucrop is weakly damaged by pests. Spring preventive treatment with biological products and competent care will help reduce the risks of plant infection to nothing.

Growing conditions

For the successful cultivation of blueberries and obtaining good yields, the plant needs an acidic pH of 3.5-4.8 peat soil, which is more common in nature in northern latitudes. Therefore, blueberries are usually grown in cold regions. Although it is currently possible to purchase ready-made peat substrates for growing this crop in any climatic zone.

In addition, Bluecrop belongs to frost-resistant varieties that are unpretentious in care, withstand temperatures up to –32° C, winters without losses under a dense layer of snow. The plant takes root well and steadily bears fruit in the North of Russia, Siberia, the Far East and  etc.

To produce a good harvest, Bluecrop bushes need to be adjacent to other blueberry varieties for cross-pollination. The flowering periods of plants must match.

Growing regions according to the State Register: Northern, Northwestern, Central, Volga-Vyatka, Central Chernobyl region, North Caucasus, Middle Volga, Nizhnevolzhsky, Ural, West and East Siberian, Far East.
