Weymouth Pine or Oriental White Pine (Pínus stróbus) — a large evergreen tree of the pine family, native to the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. The species is also found on the French islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, in Mexico and Guatemala. The pine is named after the English navigator J. Weymouth, who brought it to Britain in 1605.

Appearance

Treetall, 30-67 meters high and 100-180 cm in diameter. The crown of a young tree is conical, becoming rounded over time. Trunk – straight, with thin gray branches diverging to the sides and up. Bark – dark gray with deep cracks.

In the period from 10 to 40 years, the pine is rapidly gaining in growth. By the age of 40, its height reaches 19 meters. Then growth slows down.

Needles fluffy, dark green with a bluish tint. The needles are straight or slightly curved, with finely serrated edges, arranged in bunches of five. The length of the needles is 6-10 cm, the thickness is about 1 mm. They remain on the tree for 2-3 years.

Conesovoid-cylindrical symmetrical shape, 8-20 cm long. Color – brown or pale brown with a purple or gray tint. Formed in clusters hanging down. Seeds are red-brown with dark patches, 5-6 mm in diameter, oval-flattened.

Destination. In the 18th century, Weymouth pine was widely used in shipbuilding. Currently cultivated in forestry, used in construction. Compact subspecies can be found in the improvement of forest park areas.

Immunity. Pine suffers from rust fungus (Peridermium slrobi), especially on poor soils.

Growing conditions. Zones of frost resistance of white oriental pine – from 5a and warmer. The species does not tolerate a sharply continental climate, as well as heat and drought. The weather conditions of the Kursk, Orel, Voronezh regions are best suited to the plant.
