Tomato Australian (Aussie) bred in 2006. Refers to large-fruited, high-yielding varieties of medium late ripening. On the territory of Russia "Australian" grown in greenhouses.
Characteristics of the variety
Plant tall, indeterminate. In greenhouses, the bush reaches a height of 2 meters and needs a garter.
Fruits flat-round shape, large: average weight of tomatoes 400-500 grams, maximum – 800-1000 gr. In this case, giants can form even in the upper part of the bush. Color of tomatoes – red crimson. Pulp – fleshy, juicy, sweet, with a low content of seeds. Peel – elastic, smooth.
One of the advantages of the "Australian" – good keeping quality (10-14 days) and transportability. The tomato is suitable for sale on "fresh" markets, salads, first and second courses, lecho, sauces, juice.
Productivity varieties are high – 15-20 kg of fruits with 1m². Fruiting – stretched, ripening later – 120 days after germination (August).
Immunity. "Australian" – a new generation tomato variety, under favorable growth conditions, is not susceptible to diseases. Phytophthora is weakly affected. Therefore, you can grow a healthy crop without pesticides.
Growing conditions
In most Russian regions, the "Australian" grown in greenhouses. Plants calmly react to temperature changes and a short drought.
- Scheme of landing – 2-3 seedlings per 1 m²
- To increase the yield, the bushes form 2 stems, and to get giant tomatoes – one.
- All stepchildren are removed as they appear. The number of fruits in the brush is normalized to 3 pieces.
- Greenhouses must be ventilated. In regions with short daylight hours, tomatoes may lack natural light, in which case fitolamps will help out.
- A large-fruited variety requires abundant and regular watering – at least 1 time per week. At the same time, it is important not to allow an excess of moisture. Otherwise, the tomatoes may crack. An economical and reliable solution would be the organization of a drip irrigation system.
Seedling selection
Before you buy Australian tomato seedlings, inspect them carefully.
A quality healthy seedling:
- Shrubs – no more than 30 cm high, branched. The stem is strong, but not thick (the diameter of a regular pencil).
- Leaves – few (6-7 pieces), whole, elastic, raised up. No wrinkling, yellowing, brown or black spots.
- Roots – shaped, moist, undamaged.
- The color of the seedlings is rich green. Pale, weak stems and leaves indicate a lack of light when growing seedlings.
- Age for landing at a permanent place – 65-70 days.
Beware of fakes and diseased planting material! Buy seedlings of tomatoes "Australian" in nurseries and specialized stores.
